7:19 p.m. - 09 March 2003 It occurs to me that while catalog shopping is certainly useful and convenient, there is one rather large drawback: I end up with an overabundance of catalogs, not of all of which I requested. My coffee table is currently covered with three separate piles of catalogs, each of which is about six inches high. I don't think there are more than a few duplicates, either. There are quite a few things lying about the house that seemed like a useful idea at the time, but are currently taking up space. Many of these are in the kitchen – although, to be fair, most of those are useful, but just not particularly multi-functional. Like the waffle maker. Or the three different crock-pots (each one a different size and/or shape; all of them were gifts). Or the sprout growing contraption (that really works well, but we just don’t really eat enough sprouts to keep it in constant use). You might get the idea that we're gadget hounds. You'd be right. We're trying to cut down, but I freely admit that I'm fascinated by infomercials and the products they try to sell. I've never actually bought one from TV, but I've been known to buy them when I see them in store: I have Orange Clean under the sink, OxyClean in the laundry cabinet, and Nad's in the bathroom. They all work, but I freely admit that the Nad's isn't nearly as pain-free as they'd like you to believe. And really, as long as something is at least semi-useful, why throw it out? This has been an entry for AlphaBytes. I'm working my way through the alphabet backwards just because I can.
