K is for...
K is for...
K has always been my favorite letter. It's partly because of my name, but also because it's a somewhat rare letter, although that has caused problems of its own.
Have you ever played the icebreaker where each person gives his/her name and an adjective that describes him/her that starts with the same first letter? I've played it many, many times, and most people will let you get away with the same initial sound if you have a K name. But I once had a teacher who wanted an adjective that started with K. Can you think of one? I couldn't either. Somehow "kaleidoscopic" eventually came up, and I went with it. It stuck, and I've always used that whenever I needed to play that game ever since.
I'm very picky about my name, although I don't know anyone who isn't. But I never, ever give it out without spelling it, because no one ever gets "Kathryn" right the first time. People want to put an "e" in it, or they want to start it with a "C," both of which are just wrong. And I can say that since I'm named for my grandmother who was named for her grandmother, so I've got family history to back me up.
Even beyond my name, I have a soft spot for "k" words. It doesn't necessarily hold for "k" foods, though, since kumquats and kimchee aren't particularly high on my list of favorites. But kangaroos and koalas are cool, just as I have a fascination with keys and potassium. And I have more than one reason to be a fan of Coach K.
