B is for Buffy
B is for Buffy

I freely admit that I watch way too damn much television. My mother can vouch for the fact that at 3 and 4 years old, I was very demanding about watching Sesame Street, Mr. Rogers, and The Electric Company. Twice a day, every day. It's been years since I've watched any of them on a regular basis, but there are certain songs and skits that I still know by heart.

My devotion to TV tends to be much like my devotion to any other thing that catches my fancy: I learn everything I can about that subject, person, whatever, and follow devotedly until I get bored. Which can be anywhere from a few weeks to a few years. I haven't done any actual cross-stitching in a few months, but that doesn't stop me from ooh-ing and ah-ing all over the Nordic Needle catalog I got in the mail the other day.

All this explains why I'm terribly sad to see the very last episode of Buffy, ever, tonight. I admit that I came to the show very late -- last season, actually -- but I had FX showing two reruns a night to get caught up. At this point I've seen almost every episode. I was incredibly stupid two weeks ago and programmed the VCR incorrectly (free tip: recording 8:59 to 9:02 p.m. does not, in fact, record an hour-long show), so I didn't see that one, although I've gotten the impression I didn't miss much.

I'm convinced that a large part of the reason I finally got wrapped up in Buffy is that the last season of The X-Files sucked so badly, and I needed a cult TV show with a strong female lead to follow. I had resisted Buffy for a long time simply because of the name -- I just couldn't take it seriously. Then I discovered that it doesn't take itself seriously, either. That helped.

So, I'll be parked in front of the TV at 8 p.m. tonight, box of tissues at hand, to get my last dose of the Scoobies. Here's hoping something else like this comes along soon.

(Yes, I know, I should be watching Angel or Alias, but I haven't gotten there yet. I never catch onto TV shows at the beginning, except Survivor, which I have watched obsessively since the very first episode.)

This has been an entry for AlphaBytes. I'm working my way through the alphabet backwards just because I can.
