- 31 August 2001 I spent parts of last week formatting the hard drive and reinstalling everything. This would be when I am thankful for our network: it’s not problem to dump everything into a folder on Lee’s machine and then pull it back over when I’m ready. I think it’s stable: for now, anyway. [Note: I wrote this on Wednesday morning. It went belly-up again Wednesday night. We’re reformatting again this weekend and will be installing Win 98SE rather than Win ME, which is what I have been running.] Actually, I just upgraded last week, too: I went up to 512MB of RAM, upgraded our network to 10/100 rather than 10MPS, and installed our new scanner. Yes, a scanner. If I had any pictures to scan and add here, I would; currently they’re sitting on rolls of film I need to get developed. Patience. It’s been a month since we moved and there are still half a dozen or so boxes on the floor in the study. One of them contains the stuff that usually belongs in my desk. I’ve been sort of getting out what I needed, but that’s not really working any more. Besides, my in-laws are coming to visit this weekend, so I no longer have a choice about when I’m going to get those boxes put away. None of the pictures have been hung yet; we still don’t have curtains; the slipcover I thought I wanted I’m no longer quite so sure about; and there’s enough yard work to choke a horse. Guess how I’m spending my Labor Day weekend: both before and after the visit. I’m having trouble sleeping. I don’t really know why, either. It’s not like my job is particularly stressful: I’m a secretary. Nor am I worried about money, although I did just write the first of 360 mortgage checks. Not a pretty thing, especially since I paid off a credit card balance that was higher than the mortgage payment at the same time. Half of that was Boston expenses that we’ve already been reimbursed for, though, and the rest was our washer and dryer. Our apartment has been re-rented, so I don’t have to worry about paying the rent on top of the mortgage. But I still can’t sleep. I was up until around 2am the other night, reading and trying to fall asleep. Granted, part of the problem may have been that I was reading the first Harry Potter book, but I usually fall asleep fairly quickly even if I’m reading something terrific. I knew I should have gone with Absalom, Absalom that night – I never make it through more than a couple of pages of that one before I fall asleep. Made it very difficult when I had to read it for class, though. Add the fact that it’s been around 90 degrees every day this week and we haven’t been running the air conditioner – there are enough ceiling fans in the house that we generally don’t have to, although there is not a fan in our bedroom – and you have one very tired Katie. But it’s supposed to be in the 70s this weekend, so hopefully I’ll sleep better. I’ll certainly be worn out from getting the house ready. I’m tired just thinking about it.
